Choose Your Fighter: Coats vs. Jackets

“Coats" and "jackets" often get used interchangeably, but they're not exactly “tomayto, tomahto." Both keep you warm, yet their main difference is length, which makes each better suited to different kinds of cold weather, respectively. So, first, ask yourself: what kind of winter are you dressing for? 

If your climate leans mild, a midweight jacket will do the job nicely. Try Kyoto for sunny days and brisk evenings, or Rio if your look needs an edgy dash of denim. You also can’t go wrong with the Riverside Trench Jacket – our co-founder and creative director, Siyana, has worn hers for the last two months straight.

But if snow, sleet, and biting wind will be part of your daily forecast? Coats, it is. You'll want the coverage and insulation of a long winter coat like Charlton or Elizabeth.

For Layering, Mind The Sleeves

When temps take a plunge, do you love bundling up in layers, or do you prefer one piece that does it all? If you fall into the first camp, pay attention to how your outerwear accommodates extra layers. Chunky knits, for instance, call for roomier sleeves and a more relaxed underarm fit. Melanie, Henry, and Herald were each designed with this in mind, with dropped shoulders and easy proportions that leave plenty of room for cozy pieces beneath.

More tailored silhouettes like Diana and Maren are a little less forgiving for bulkier knits, but their more structured fit creates clean, flattering lines (which may be more you thing if you're not a major layering fan).
