Based in New Jersey, originally from Switzerland, Simone Christen is a painter of abstract, non-representational works shaped by a minimalist aesthetic and the quiet power of color, form and space. Her paintings seek to capture emotion and atmosphere, creating a subtle but deep connection with the viewer. She’s drawn to the interplay between the autonomy of the elements and their relationship to one another, as well as the ways color fields, subtle gestures, and compositional balance generate resonance beyond the image.

Tell us a little about yourself!

After living and working in Switzerland for most of my life, I moved with my family to rural New Jersey in 2020, at the start of the pandemic, thereby facing new challenges in both my professional and family life. Moving under such extraordinary circumstances became a life-changing experience that shaped both my personality and my art. It sharpened my focus on what is essential and led to a simplification of my art. It also marked my transition to working as a full-time artist.

Now I work in a studio on a small horse farm overlooking fields and forests, creating paintings that are serene, grounded, and expansive. The natural surroundings, paired with the nearby energy of New York City, unite two worlds that continue to nourish and inspire my work.

When, and how, did you start your artistic practice, and how did it evolve into a career?

For as long as I can remember, creativity has been an important part of my life. The art corner was my favorite spot in kindergarten, and later, art classes became my favorite subjects in school. During an exchange semester in the United States, I had the opportunity to explore art from a different cultural perspective and took as many art classes as possible.

After graduating from high school, I was accepted into an art college in Switzerland and loved my foundational studies there. However, my path then led me to university, where I earned a master's degree in geography. During my subsequent career in digital cartography and graphic design, as well as while raising a family, I continued my creative practice in my spare time.

About ten years ago, I decided to devote myself more fully to art, resumed my studies, and began dedicating even more time to my practice. Since moving to the United States in 2020, I have been working as a full-time artist.

What made you gravitate towards painting as a medium?

Originally, I was more interested in drawing and ceramics and only slowly discovered my love for painting. It was in 2019 that I transitioned to completely non-representational painting, and it has captivated me ever since. At this point, I feel that painting is the best medium for me to express myself artistically.

I love the materials—from canvas and brushes to washes and wooden frames—and find the act of painting itself to be deeply sensual and satisfying. I love using swaths of color and texture to capture and convey emotion.

Can you describe your art style to us, as well as what inspires it?

I create non-representational paintings grounded in a minimalist aesthetic. My work often features just a few expansive fields of color, each with its own expression and sense of space. Subtle transparency allows forms to overlap, creating quiet, nuanced transitions.

Balance and tranquility are central to my practice. My paintings invite moments of self-reflection, mindfulness, and a sense of grounding.

My work is shaped by a personal sense of aesthetics, a pursuit of calm, and a desire to create art that offers a gentle, grounding experience. I draw inspiration from nature, everyday surroundings, and poetry, though it most often begins with a feeling or atmosphere I hope to capture.

What’s one thing most people wouldn’t think about regarding painting as a profession?

Most people probably think that an artist spends all their time in the studio being creative. That is, of course, the most important and fulfilling part of the job, but administrative tasks take up almost as much time. As an artist, you’re a small business owner who handles production, shipping, photography, marketing, bookkeeping, and so on. You have many different responsibilities, but that’s also what makes the work so interesting and challenging.

When painting goes from a hobby to a career, you can’t just create whenever you feel like it or when inspiration strikes. You go into the studio and get to work, trusting that the process will spark inspiration. That requires discipline and sometimes bravery. Even though the creative process can sometimes be daunting and exhausting, it’s still the best feeling to know deep down that you’re doing what you truly want to do.

What does education mean to you and how has it influenced your work?

Growing up and living most of my life in Switzerland, I have always been in the privileged situation to have access to an excellent education system. Sometimes you take for granted what seems normal to you. I realize how fortunate I am to have received a good education, that it opens doors, provides independence and the freedom to choose your own path. Nowadays, there is also so much information freely available on the internet, that you can easily acquire knowledge if you wish to. 

Education influenced my path also in the way that I was able to receive an art education. But as an artist there is also a lot you cannot learn in class, like finding your artistic voice or developing special techniques to bring your ideas to life. These are things you have to figure out for yourself through experimentation, observation, failure, and unexpected outcomes.

What role does style play in the work you do?

My minimalist style emphasizes simplicity, using clean lines, reduced imagery, limited color palettes, and ample negative space to create visual quietude. The approach of "less is more" rejects excess and allows the essence of the work—peaceful introspection—to emerge without distraction.

What is your favorite piece from your Marcella Capsule?

At first sight, I fell in love with the Senna Gown. The cut is so flattering, and the fabric has just the right amount of shine, yet it still feels incredibly comfortable and easy to wear.

In clothing, I usually look for the same qualities as I do in my paintings—clean lines, simple silhouettes, harmony, and honest materials. It feels right to dress in clothing that aligns not only with my style, but also with my philosophy, personality, and moral compass.
