We’ve all been there: standing in front of a closet full of clothes, thinking “I have nothing to wear.” Fortunately, that’s nothing a seasonal reset can’t solve—and as sustainable minimalists, we’ve got the process down.
As summer fades into fall (and we gear up for our upcoming FW24 collection launch!), let this be your guide to falling in love with your closet all over again. Say goodbye to decision fatigue with your newly streamlined closet...
Step 1: Declutter
This first step is often the hardest—assessing our wardrobes and wrestling with those “what-ifs” and “maybe somedays” that complicate parting with pieces that no longer serve us. When in doubt, consider these key questions:
- “Does it fit me and do I feel confident in it?” If not, bid farewell. Celebrate and dress for the body you have now.
- “Have I worn this in the last three weeks?” If the answer is no, it might be time to let it go. Try the hanger trick: turn all your hangers in one direction and flip them once you wear the item. This will help you keep track of what you truly use.
- “Does it bring me joy?” If it doesn’t, move on and remind yourself that getting dressed every day should be easy and fun—not a chore.
Step 2: Dispose
Now, what to do with pieces that didn’t make the cut? Given that the average American generates 82 lbs of textile waste each year, handling these items sustainably is essential. As an ethical fashion brand committed to minimizing waste (just check out our just in time production approach for proof!) we’ve carefully considered best practices for dealing with a discard pile.
For one, you can recycle what you don’t want. Various take-back programs offer convenient recycling for anyone, anywhere—just pack them up and send them off. It’s that easy.
If you’re feeling creative, try upcycling! Cut pieces up, repurpose the fabric, and transform unwanted clothes into something new and loved.
To keep clothes out of landfills and within your community, try donating them to charities or nonprofits. Opt for consignment stores like Poshmark or the Real Real to give your clothes a second life with someone who might cherish them.
Step 3: Discover
Here comes the fun part: discovering the essentials to round out your capsule wardrobe, the foundation of which depends on dynamic pieces with endless styling and layering potential.
Think timeless silhouettes with a twist, like our best-selling Cara Top—an essential turtleneck in durable European jersey with a touch of intrigue at the sheer neckline and sleeves. When it comes to versatile styling, she never disappoints. Get inspired for a lifetime of looks with 8 different ways we like to style her.
Our staple Clara Dress embodies versatility, dressing up and down and seamlessly transitioning throughout the seasons. Take a look at the 9 different ways we’ve worn her to see just how many possibilities await with this single piece.
For years, we’ve been curating inspiration for our own capsule wardrobes by chatting with women we admire for their impact and, of course, their impeccable style. Peruse our archive of capsule features to hear the "best of the best" talk about their philosophy on style and how they curate their closets.
A small collection of versatile, utilitarian pieces impacts more than just your wardrobe—it infuses ease into your entire lifestyle. With a well-curated collection of minimalist pieces, you'll never stand lost before your closet. Instead, your creative freedom will flow and it will become seamless to assemble a look that transitions between work and play or day and night.
May this be the start of an effortless new era of style for you!
xoxo,
Team Marcella

Thanks for these tips – just the gentle push I needed to let go of clothes I’ve kept for far too long!
(Not getting rid of any of my Marcella things though)
