Coat Check: Finding the Perfect Winter HERO
The weather outside may soon be frightful, but a high-quality winter coat can turn any drab forecast into a winter wonderland. More than a stylish layer, it can shift your whole perspective on a colder, darker season, empowering you to move through winter with comfort and confidence. Manage to pair that practicality with a versatile silhouette? You're now truly set. So, how to find your own cold-weather companion? Let’s talk...
Choose Your Fighter: Coats vs. Jackets
“Coats" and "jackets" often get used interchangeably, but they're not exactly “tomayto, tomahto." Both keep you warm, yet their main difference is length, which makes each better suited to different kinds of cold weather, respectively. So, first, ask yourself: what kind of winter are you dressing for?
If your climate leans mild, a midweight jacket will do the job nicely. Try Kyoto for sunny days and brisk evenings, or Rio if your look needs an edgy dash of denim. You also can’t go wrong with the Riverside Trench Jacket – our co-founder and creative director, Siyana, has worn hers for the last two months straight.
But if snow, sleet, and biting wind will be part of your daily forecast? Coats, it is. You'll want the coverage and insulation of a long winter coat like Charlton or Elizabeth.
For Layering, Mind The Sleeves
When temps take a plunge, do you love bundling up in layers, or do you prefer one piece that does it all? If you fall into the first camp, pay attention to how your outerwear accommodates extra layers. Chunky knits, for instance, call for roomier sleeves and a more relaxed underarm fit. Melanie, Henry, and Herald were each designed with this in mind, with dropped shoulders and easy proportions that leave plenty of room for cozy pieces beneath.
More tailored silhouettes like Diana and Maren are a little less forgiving for bulkier knits, but their more structured fit creates clean, flattering lines (which may be more you thing if you're not a major layering fan).
Winter-Ready Materials
We've always had a soft spot for wool, and we're loyal to the Italian virgin wool we commonly design with for its plush softness and perfect weight. The elegance of a structured European wool coat remains unmatched. Our best-selling Elizabeth proves the point (again).
But if you want more options? Say no more.
Our latest puffer collection delivers the same warmth and staying power as quality wool, but with surprising lightness and even more weather resistance. Designed for harsh commutes, sudden downpours, and mornings that start before sunrise, puffers are quick to grab, easy to clean, and effortlessly stylish. Our own particular fave here is Bronte, an instant cold-weather classic for modern-day heroines.
At Marcella, we love how when the weather tempts you to stay indoors until spring, the right winter coat still keeps the world open and available. Finding your right winter coat just comes down to a proper balance of fashion with function. Whether you’re drawn to a timeless wool coat, a mid-weight jacket, or a contemporary puffer, the goal should remain the same: to keep warm, look sharp, and continue to feel your best when the cold comes on strong. Happy hunting!
xoxo,
Team Marcella
